Spring Fever

Well, I guess it has been some time since my last post.  Winter, as a rule, is generally a little slower in the garden world - especially when the garden is buried under snow and ice.

However, here in the bustling metropolis of Sarnia, ON, Canada, we have a garden center that is going out of business, and they are auctioning off all of their stock; nursery, greenhouse, and hardscape products.  While it is sad that one of our favorite places is going away, I feel happy for the retiring owners and wish them the best....annnnnd the auction really got the spring garden juices flowing.

They are splitting the auction into three parts; one auction for every Saturday starting March 4.  Well, I am not one to dilly-dally, so I was quick to get together with Ker and start pouring over their available online stock.

The bidding was lively, and some things certainly went for more than retail pricing, but I think that is probably due to some spring fever shared by my fellow Canadians.

We did alright, though.  We won 4 lots that we were watching for a really good price.  For a total of 150$ CAD, we won the following lots:

This is a lot of 18 ferns:  6 Japanese Painted Fern 'Godzilla', 11 'Lady in Red' Fern and 1 Christmas Fern.  These will be used mainly for our new garden renovation project of the North side yard in spring 2023.

Athyrium felix-forma 'Lady in Red'

Polystichum acrostichoides 'Christmas Fern'

Athyrium nipponicum pictum 'Godzilla'

A couple of nice big moss hanging planters.  These will probably be used on the front porch for some nice Boston Ferns in the spring, or maybe in the back pergola.  Who can know?  ;)

A couple of really nice window boxes, which we will use on the garage windows this summer.

Finally, we won some nice grapevine wreaths and several lots of red twig dogwood stems.  These will be handy next winter.

While this hasn't been a particularly 'hard' winter, these little bursts of spring anticipation help to get through the last few weeks of blah.  Looking forward to the next auction, and looking forward to warmer spring temps.  Stay safe.

Love J
