2022 Hostas G, H
Ghost Spirit is a nice small/medium hosta with a white and green misted center. This far along in the season the misting is mostly faded, but still visible at the highest resolution. I picked this one up on a Facebook Marketplace sale in Strathroy, ON.
Golden Falls, oh how I want to love you. Real talk; I am disappointed in this hosta. This a fairly new sport of Niagara Falls, and when we purchased was a beautiful limey chartreuse color. It has since faded to a pretty average green and is just kind of....fine. I am hoping it gets through its awkward teenage years looking a little better. Golden Falls was purchased at Hosta Choice Gardens, in Appin, ON.
Vigorous, dense and nicely colored. It's a classic for a reason. Side note, I have been thinking a lot lately about this topic; not hostas, but classic things. A thing is a classic because it is bona fide good. I think I sometimes get dazzled by the new and under appreciate the classics. Anyways, just a casual observation that has been bouncing around my head for a couple of weeks. Golden Tiara comes from a Facebook Marketplace sale in Strathroy, ON.

Oh look, another classic ;) Guardian Angel is top 5 for me. From Hosta Choice Gardens.
See, it's all about balance. Classics and shiny new things. This is Gunther's Prize. My favorite hosta I have ever seen. Mottled, streaky, limey, tall...awesome. Gunther was the most I have spent on a hosta, picking it up from a new friend in the US, Brian White. Brian is a really cool breeder. If you like hostas, check out his site www.brianwhitesnursery.com
Admittedly, Gunther is a bit ugly at the moment. He has been ravaged by bare root shipping, mid-summer planting, and by, what I assume to be, some kind of cartel gang squirrel activity. I tried to cut his leaves loose to let him air out, but los squirrelos were just too rowdy. Next year is Gunther's year to shine.
From Bill Gibbons place in Innerkip, comes Grand Slam. Nice shiny and wavy leaf. Not a show stopper, but solid. Will mature into a nice plant for sure. This is one from the front yard planted under our neighbors @#$%$ Norway Maples. Fingers crossed.
How many hostas can you have in your top 5....it's gotta be like 17 or 18, right? Meet Hans. He is here to pump you up. Sorry. That was horrible.
Hans is a thick leaved, wavy, variegated masterpiece. Good size for a nursery purchase. Comes from Bordine's in Rochester, MI.
Heat Wave is another thicc boy. Good substance, great color and should grow to be a nice medium sized hosta. I saw one in a Facebook hosta group this week and it must have been 4'across. Hoping I see mine approach that size. Heat Wave is also from Hosta Choice Gardens.
Hope Spring Eternal. Clunky name....there, I said it. This one is going to be a stunner. Water color transitions between the colors really captures the eye. Another one from Hosta Choice Gardens.
If you haven't noticed by now, not only are the hostas grouped alphabetically, they are also listed in alphabetical order in each post. Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to my brain.
Oh, I also purchased another A hosta this week. This is Amazone, or so it says on the tag. I am not convinced, but I am a sucker for a white flame centered hosta.
PS - Hen manure seems to be a semi-good deterrent for the crazy squirrels.
